Historic Gardens and Natural Heritage Sites in Ontario

National Historic Sites include many historic gardens and sites of natural heritage. These range from carefully designed and tended formal gardens to remnants of historic landscapes to extensive natural settings and aboriginal habitations. The following list does not include battle sites that may also include extensive landscape features.

Garden Voices

Following a workshop on historic gardens sponsored by NHSAO and held at Parkwood in March 2011, participants expressed a desire to keep in touch, expand their numbers, and plan future projects to enhance Ontario's historic gardens and reach a broader audience. Thus was born the Historic Gardens Project.

Your Alliance joined forces with Parkwood and the Ontario Garden Coalition to develop a garden showcase opportunity for 2012, to coincide with heightened heritage awareness during the 1812 bicentennial observances. The project had a tourism thrust to get Ontarians out and exploring these gardens which, in too many cases, are hidden garden gems. A steering committee was formed and funding assistance secured from Ontario's Cultural Strategic Investment Fund.

Thirty-five gardens or cultural landscapes were identified, and brought together, we believe for the first time, under the Garden Voices banner, and are presented on a new website: www.gardenvoices.ca. The roster includes, but is not limited to, National Historic Sites, in order to be as inclusive and rich as possible. The gardens are organized geographically by Ontario Tourism Region, to encourage visitors to explore while in the area or attract visitors to the RTO in the first place.

The title for the project alludes to the stories that each historic garden has to tell about the people who shaped it, and the voices of the owners, workers, designers, personalities, and even the era itself, that help bring its history to life.

Some of the gardens created special programs and visitor offerings - to animate the historic voices of the gardens in richer formats. These are presented as Feature Experiences on the site. We are delighted that National Historic Sites are prominent among them: Billy Bishop Home and Museum, Dundurn Castle, Hutchison House, Parkwood, Ruthven Park and Wellington County Museum.

Each garden was asked to contribute a self-determined participant fee based on budget capacity, which provided funds for some additional promotion for the project.

The title for the project was inspired by the wonderful publication, Garden Voices: Two Centuries of Canadian Garden Writing, edited by Edwinna von Baeyer and Pleasance Crawford.
